Nancy Wilson and Maisie Richardson
The Jazz singer Nancy Wilson a three-time Grammy Award winner was born February 20 1937 in Chillicothe Ohio to iron-worker Olden Wilson, and former Lillian Ryan who worked as a housekeeper. Nancy was the youngest of six kids. Nancy grew up listening to records from her father as well as his passion for music. At the age of four, Nancy knew that her future was as a singer. Her talents were developed when she sang in the church choir. In her early teens, she won the talent show on T.V. and started appearing regularly in The Skyline Melodies Tv Show while still in High School. When she was 15, Nancy began her career in night clubs. Nancy quit Central State University in Ohio after being matriculating for a full year. In 1956 she made her debut album along with Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band. They toured together throughout 1956 until 1958. In the band, Nancy released her first record on Dot Records. Cannonball Adderley advised that she should move in New York to further her career, and she moved into The Big Town at the end of the year 1959. Within a short time she had been singing at The Blue Morocco Night Club located on Boston Road near The Bronx. A representative from Adderley's company was able to hear her perform and promptly signed her. She made her recording debut in the year 1960, with one single following the contract with Capitol records. Guess who saw today. Capitol released five Nancy Wilson records in just two years. Under the direction of Cannonball Adderley, Wilson began concentrating on R&B and then shifted her focus towards torch and jazz. Nancy Wilson, Cannonball Adderley and their 1962 collaboration made her a star. She had her breakthrough smash Tell Me the Truth by 1963. In the year following the release, she was being invited to the New York's Coconut Grove - the top nightclub in America.
